Plants and animals

Fish

It is said that almost all the kinds of fish that live in Honshu can be seen in the Shinano River. There are 55 kinds of fish such as a salmon, sweet fish and zacco platypus.


Birds

In the Shinano River system, including the Ohkouzu Diversion Channel, about 133 kinds of birds have been seen. Beside the river, groups of starlings can be seen in summer, resting ducks at the water surface can be seen in fall.


Plants

At the bank of the Shinano River system, numerous plants can be seen. According to surveys, there are 1129 kinds of plants.
At the river beach, short plants such as spiderwort, polygonum and phragmites grow close to the water, and tall plants such as osier and Juglans mandshurica can be seen forming various plant communities further away from the bank.
