 Meguro Estate, which was built in 1797, still reminds visitors of the life of a wealthy farming family, which played the role of grand village headman for many generations in the Koide-Suhara District. It was designated an important national cultural property in 1967.

 From early morning to late at night on 3rd March every year, various rituals take place. In the late afternoon, barely clad youths having undergone the ritual of pouring ice-cold water all over the body to purify it amidst the deep snow jostle together in front of the main shrine, shouting "san'yo, san'yo" ... a unique festival fitting the image of Vaisravans, the god of arms, who destroys evil forces.

 On 1st July every year, sugi wood is piled up in front of the altar of the Yamaguchisatomiya of the Hakkai Shrine and is burned to produce red hot charcoal. Devotees of the Shrine, led by mountain priests, walk across the scorching ground with bare feet, praying for the safety and good health of family members. In addition to walking over live charcoal, some people also walk along the sharp edge of a sword.

 This famous monastery of the Shodo Sect of Zen Buddhism is given the title of Kinjozan. The history of Untoan Monastery is said to have began when the mother of Fusasaki Fujiwara, a grandson of Kamatari Fujiwara, donated the monastery some 1,200 years ago.

 The Eirinji Temple, constructed some 500 years ago, is a major feature of the cityfs cultural heritage. Here are preserved more than 100 works of art, including sculptures and paintings, by the late Edo period master craftsman Uncho Ishikawa, to which he dedicated himself over a 13-year period.

 Akiyama Country is the general name of a group of settlements dotted in the upper reaches of Nakatsu River, a tributary of Shinano River. This is a remote area nestling deep in the grandiose nature of the border region between the Joetsu and Shin-Etsu Districts and is said to have provided a sanctuary for members of the Heike Clan defeated in the civil war.
